Stepping into life after cancer treatment is a powerful and deeply personal journey. For many, remission isn’t just the end of a chapter—it’s the beginning of a new one focused on rebuilding health, restoring balance, and preventing recurrence.
That’s where naturopathic medicine can play a meaningful role. But how do you know if a naturopathic doctor is truly equipped to support your unique needs in recovery?
Here are three essential questions to ask your ND to ensure you’re getting thoughtful, individualized care—rooted in both evidence and empathy.
1. How many supplements do you typically prescribe to cancer recovery patients?
This question might seem simple, but it reveals a lot about a practitioner’s philosophy.
Are they tailoring your protocol specifically to your body and needs? Or are they relying on a one-size-fits-all supplement list that could leave you overwhelmed and confused?
I encourage the use my version of the SMART principles—ensuring your plan is rooted in Science, Measurable, cultivates Awareness, is Realistic, and Transformative. Supplementation should support your healing journey, not complicate it. Look for a provider who emphasizes balance, personalization, and long-term sustainability.
2. How do you navigate all the data—like labs, research, and evolving protocols?
Between blood work, genetic markers, lifestyle factors, and rapidly changing research, cancer recovery care can become complex. You’ll want to know if your ND uses a clear, comprehensive system to evaluate and guide your progress.
Do they rely on routine lab testing? Do they use frameworks like the 8 Pillars of Recovery to track and assess your healing on multiple levels (physical, emotional, nutritional, detoxification, etc.)?
This question helps you understand how deeply they engage with the whole picture, and whether they can explain your current health status in a way that makes sense to you—without the overwhelm.
3. How important is lifestyle—especially nutrition—in your approach to recovery?
Nutrition is not a “bonus” in cancer remission—it’s foundational.
Asking this question gives insight into whether your practitioner treats nutrition as a core part of your healing, and if their guidance is individualized. A rigid, cookie-cutter diet plan may not serve you in the long run. What you’re looking for is a provider who understands you—your culture, your preferences, your body—and can support you in making sustainable, personalized choices.
A strong naturopath will view lifestyle as medicine: including sleep, stress relief, hydration, movement, and mindset—not just diet alone.
The Bottom Line
Your remission care team should treat you—not just your diagnosis. Asking these three questions will help you find a naturopathic doctor who sees your healing as a dynamic, whole-person process, and is committed to walking that journey with you.
You deserve care that’s as unique as your story.
